Movies Roundup - August 2023

Welcome to my Movies Roundup - a turbo-charged guide to the mind-blowing films hitting theaters this month (and a few straddling over from the previous month). Buckle up for high-octane action, heart-fluttering romance, stunning animation and jaw-dropping adventures that'll sweep you off your feet and into the cinematic whirlwind. Get set, get excited, and let's dive headfirst into the August blockbuster must-watches."

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
1h39m, Animation, 7-9 PG

The film follows the Turtle brothers as they work to earn the love of New York City while facing down an army of mutants.

My most anticipated movie for the month of August is Seth Rogen's take on the heroes in a half-shell, the Ninja Turtles. The initial reviews are in and boy are they good. The animation style is also unique and very Spiderverse-like So I'm already hooked.

Barbie
1h54m, Comedy, 13

Barbie suffers a crisis that leads her to question her world and her existence.

Wrapped in plastic, she's fantastic. Already at $1 Billion at the global box office, there's no slowing down for this movie as it continues to climb.

Oppenheimer
3h1m, Biography, 16

The story of American scientist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.

Christopher Nolan is a master in creating tension. His genius ability to use sound and the complete lack thereof makes for truly cinematic experiences. Do see it in the IMAX for a full on immersion. That said, the movie, the acting and the politics make for an absolutely intriguing movie. My only minor gripe was that I was hoping for a little more Sciency stuff but it was still a gut-wrenching movie.

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
2h43m, Action, 13

Ethan Hunt and his IMF team must track down a dangerous weapon before it falls into the wrong hands.

Ethan Hunt is back and the mission, should you choose to purchase a ticket and watch, has even higher stakes, more explosive action and over-the-top stunts that will leave you gleefully giddy. Yes, there is a McGuffin in the mix to drive the plot and you can already expect the literal cliffhanger towards the end but if that's too much of a spoiler, don't worry  - this message will self destruct in 8...5...3...2...1

Gran Turismo
2h15m, Action, 13

Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs - a struggling, working-class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec - who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.

It's NOT a Video Game movie. In fact, they should fire the damn marketers for trying to use that as a selling point. What it is, is a high octane adrenalin rush real-life drama that will keep you captivated from the first to final lap.

Blue Beetle
2h8m, Superhero, 13

An alien relic chooses Jaime Reyes to be its symbiotic host, bestowing the teenager with a suit of armor that's capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.

Superhero fatigue is real. No seriously. I love comic books and superheroes. If this blog is a testament to anything it is that I'm all for spandex, team-ups and capes but with the recent superhero overload ala Disney, Warner et al, I'm hoping that Blue Beetle can break the overall cycle.

Last Voyage Of The Demeter
1h58m, Horror, 16

A crew sailing from Carpathia to England find that they are carrying very dangerous cargo.

Dracula decides to get a little sea breeze on a cruise. MFC was fully booked so he settled on the Demeter. The hors d'oeuvres must have not been to his liking. Nor the bloody Mary cocktails.

Master Gardener
1h51m, Thriller, 16

A meticulous horticulturist who is devoted to tending the grounds of a beautiful estate and pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager.

Watch if you enjoy slow burn thrillers. And plants. Especially plants.

Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny

2h34m, Action, 16

Archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary artifact that can change the course of history.

It's one final adventure for Doctor Jones. Having already watched this and without giving away any spoilers, it is a pretty decent adventure movie that captures a lot of that OG Indiana Jones nostalgia.
