Retro Arcade: The Goonies 1986 Platform Game Walkthrough: Stage 2
Stage 2: The Hidden Basement
Time Limit: 180 seconds
Special Items: Flame Suit, Raincoat
Hidden Stuff: Steven Spielberg
How To Make Secret Items Appear: Down button
Beneath the Fratelli's hideout, a sprawling basement unfolds, with intricate sewer pipes and menacing heat vents that sporadically release formidable jets of flame. Here, the rat population multiplies, and the relentless pursuit of both Fratelli brothers, spurred by Mama Fratelli's orders to capture you, intensifies. Your mission leads you through labyrinthine back rooms in pursuit of vital keys.
In this section, you'll encounter four skull-marked doors, and three more await in part C. Consequently, your exploration may yield not only keys and a Goonie but also other valuable items like Red Potions or a Slingshot. Exercise caution with the potions, especially if your health meter is full, as saving them for a dire moment can prove wiser.
Secrets:
Flamesuit
For those who missed the opportunity to acquire this invaluable fire-resistant attire in Stage 1, redemption awaits here. To procure it, unveil an item bag located just to the left of the skull-marked door in part A, east of skull mouth A. This Flamesuit is indispensable for navigating safely beneath the fiery jets.
Raincoat
The Raincoat's significance cannot be overstated. Given the prevalence of water-based traps in this stage, this protective garment becomes a lifeline, shielding you from harm upon contact with such hazards. Your quest to obtain it leads to the platform in part C, situated immediately to the right of the leftmost skull-marked door. Departing this stage without securing the Raincoat would be an unwise choice.
Steven Spielberg
A surprise cameo awaits in this stage, as the original writer of the movie, Steven Spielberg, makes a special guest appearance. Should you successfully locate and collect him, your efforts will be rewarded with a generous 5000-point bonus. Spielberg remains hidden in part C, positioned on the floor directly above the rightmost skull-marked door, adding a touch of cinematic flair to your adventure.
Passageway A: The Creepy Cave
Time Limit: 110 seconds
Special Items: None
Hidden Stuff: Konami Man
Within the depths of the basement, Mikey unexpectedly stumbles upon a concealed passageway, serving as an interlude between stages. Here, the primary objective shifts from collecting keys to uncovering hidden surprises, while the passage becomes a haunting realm patrolled by bats and inhabited by lurking skeletons, all guarding coveted diamond treasures.
Remarkably, this short passage stands as the lengthiest among its counterparts, uniquely divided into two segments. Although the path leading to the upper left is entirely optional, venturing forth proves worthwhile. Amidst a constant influx of bats and sporadic appearances of skeletons, caution is paramount.
Two substantial sets of four diamonds await discovery in this passage. However, a peculiar pattern unfolds—only three diamonds manifest on the screen simultaneously. To unveil the elusive fourth gem, acquisition of at least one diamond becomes a requisite. Start by gathering the four diamonds situated in the upper left region, then descend to the vine leading to the passage's second half. Just before descending, a special guest awaits your summons.
In the early days of Konami's history, the company crafted a mascot known as Konamiman. Bearing a striking resemblance to Superman but adorned with a distinctive horned helmet, this character makes a cameo appearance. By executing the correct input just before reaching the vine that descends to the passage's second part, you can summon Konamiman, who gracefully traverses the screen from right to left. Capturing this elusive figure rewards you with an effortless 5000 points, a fitting tribute to Konami's enduring legacy.
Stay tuned for Stage 3 of The Goonies 1986 Platform Game, coming next week!
